Dental Benefit Basics

If you’re not used to reviewing dental insurance documents, these policies can sound like nothing more than a string of jargon. Our knowledgeable dental team members will be happy to help you review your individual plan, but some of the commonly used terms include the following:

  • Premium – the monthly fee you pay to receive insurance coverage
  • Maximum treatment fee – the highest price for a specific treatment your insurance benefits will cover
  • Annual treatment maximum – the highest amount your insurer will cover for a year of dental treatments
  • Out of pocket costs – the percentage of treatment pricing that you’re responsible for

Your Dental Insurance Policy

Every insurance policy represents a unique contract between the patient and their insurer. Your policy will outline coverage for specific treatments as well as plan maximums and other variables that impact your coverage. While we’ll need to review your individual insurance plan to provide exact estimates of your coverage, most policies offer some combination of the following:

  • Preventive dentistry services covered 80 to 100%
  • Restorative dentistry services covered 50 to 80%
  • Orthodontic treatments when elected covered 25 to 70%
  • Other services like sedation and oral appliances covered 10 to 50%

Tips to Maximize Dental Insurance Coverage

If you want to make the most of your dental insurance benefits, keep the following in mind:

  • Avoid the need for advanced oral health care services that receive little or no insurance coverage by visiting us twice a year for preventive dental care
  • Ask for preauthorization before beginning a treatment plan to ensure your benefits are there when you need them
  • Keep track of your treatment and annual maximums to ensure you have benefits available
  • Visit an in-network dentist to ensure you have the lowest out of pocket treatment costs

In-Network VS Out of Network Dental Care

Most dental insurance policies are either health maintenance organization (HMO) or preferred provider organization (PPO) plans. HMO policies have extremely strict delineations regarding what dentist you can visit and what services you can receive. We are not currently in-network with any HMO plans, but if you happen to live too far from a provider who accepts your HMO plan, we may be able to assist you. We’re always happy to help patients make the most of their coverage, so if you have an HMO plan, let us know. For those patients with PPO plans, we’re happy to process and file claims, and we offer in-network coverage for a number of PPO benefit plans. As in-network dentists with your PPO provider, we have agreed to the insurer’s set fees to ensure you have the lowest out of pocket treatment costs. We offer in-network benefits for the following insurers:
